Knees-up at airport security

London - We accept having fingerprints taken and eyeballs scanned by airport security.

But we might have to reveal our knees, too.

The Independent newspaper in the UK reported that between 10 and 20 families a day were being stopped from boarding flights to South Africa at Heathrow Airport during the pre-Christmas travel period. Credit: Reuters

Scientists claim each of us has a unique kneecap and that an MRI scan could positively identify us.

Researcher Lior Shamir, of Lawrence University in the US, says: “The test is perfect for airport security. Contact lenses can fool iris recognition systems and passports can be forged but it’s difficult to alter your kneecaps.”

The system is not yet perfect as MRI scanners are slow. But the technology is improving, so get ready to put your knees on show. - Daily Mail
