London - Planes operated by the Polish airline LOT are the loudest flights landing at Heathrow, according to a “league table” of noise performance.

The Polish carrier came bottom of the 50-strong list, followed closely by Israeli airline El Al and Thai Airways.

British Airways’ short-haul flights were the quietest recorded by Heathrow bosses, with Virgin Atlantic domestic services and planes from Aer Lingus taking second and third place.

Experts say factors affecting noise performance include how steeply the pilot descends and the age of the plane – with older models tending to be louder than their newer counterparts.

Anti-noise campaigner John Stewart said the table was “a constructive move to improve the noise climate”. - Daily Mail
