SA Airways has begun flying commercial flights to Pointe Noire in the Republic of Congo, the airline said on Monday.

SAA spokeswoman Dileseng Koetle said the first flight into Pointe Noire took off on January 26.

“This welcome addition to the airline's ever expanding route network on the continent offers its customers further access into central Africa,” she said.

“SAA will be operating to 21 cities on the continent with the commencement of this service.”

Pointe Noire is SAA's fourth new destination on the continent for the 2011/12 financial year.

It joins Ndola in Zambia, Kigali in Rwanda, and Bujumbura in Burundi as the airline's most recent additions to its route network in Africa.

Flights to Pointe Noire were scheduled twice a week, Koetle said.

The flights would be made in a narrow-body A319 aircraft which can carry 120 passengers. - Sapa
