Pretoria - South African National Parks (SANParks) is opening up its parks during South African National Parks Week with free, open access to all South Africans.

This year’s parks week is scheduled for September 8 to 12. The official opening will be launched by the Deputy Minister of Environmental Affairs, Barbara Thomson at Tsitsikamma, Garden Route National Park in the Western Cape.

Tsitsikamma, the first Marine Protected Area (MPA) in Africa and one of the largest, will also be celebrating its 50th birthday. This MPA is considered to be the marine equivalent of the Kruger National Park. Tsitsikamma is also home to the famous Otter trail hike, which turns 46 this year. As part of celebrating this, the Garden Route National Park is rebranding this world famous green flag status hike.

The objective of SA National Parks Week is to cultivate a sense of understanding and pride in South Africans of their natural, cultural and historical heritage; which is the basis for the established theme “Know Your National Parks”.
