AmaWaterways, one of Europe’s leading river cruise operators, has repositioned one of its state-of-the-art passenger vessels, MS AmaDagio, from service on the Rhine, Mosel and Danube to its new location in Provence, France.

Getting the vessel from Rotterdam in the Netherlands to Marseille in France was not a simple operation, as the two ports are separated by a sizeable chunk of land, as well as the Alps, and there is no river linkage. Remember, too, that the river boats don’t do open-sea sailing.

But there was a solution: a piggy-back operation on board a cargo transporter from Rotterdam.

The ship was transported through the English Channel around Spain and Portugal and through the Straits of Gibraltar before docking in Marseille, where it was lowered into the harbour’s waters to commence seven-night cruises between Lyon and Arles throughout the year.

River cruising in Europe, Russia, the Far East and elsewhere is fast becoming the buzzword for savvy vacationers who enjoy the atmosphere, luxury and convenience of a fully-inclusive easy-to-do holiday at affordable prices in the world’s top destinations. - Saturday Star
