London - After sitting for hours in a broken down plane when their flight was cancelled, the holidaymakers were desperate for a comfy bed for the night.

But rather than put them up in a local hotel the travel firm bussed them to one more than 50 miles (about 80km) away.

Nearly 300 passengers went without food or water for three hours on the hottest day of the year as engineers tried to repair Thomas Cook’s Manchester to Kos service on Sunday.

They were then driven for an hour to a Hilton hotel in Blackpool. After a 100-mile round trip, they finally flew from Manchester the next morning.

Rebecca Grayell-Rees, 23, who reached her hotel on the Aegean at 8pm that day, called it “a nightmare”.

She said: “We were also left locked in a bus at the side of the runway.” Thomas Cook said all Manchester hotels of “sufficient quality” were booked up for events including a Coldplay gig.
