Johannesburg - Mozambique’s Portuguese Island is a much-loved uninhabited nature reserve boasting pristine beaches, dense vegetation, blue lagoons and small patches of mangrove.

To bolster the island’s already popular reputation, MSC Cruises has invested heavily in facility upgrades and new infrastructure in the area. Over the last 2014-15 cruise season, MSC cruised to Portuguese Island 35 times, and carried over 43 800 passengers to its shores.

This season, MSC Cruises expects to increase visits to Portuguese Island, so many more travellers can experience this island paradise.

To cope with the increase in visitors, MSC Cruises has made a number of essential upgrades to the infrastructure on the island, as well as improvements to the entertainment and bar areas, the dining area, the excursion centre, and the VIP area.

New infrastructure built includes a new furnished entertainment area, dining deck, a fully equipped excursion centre, additional storage area, an enlarged beach kitchen, a cooler spray system, extra shade sails, and extra indigenous palm trees for added shade and aesthetic impact.

The infrastructure development commissioned by MSC is focused on preserving the ecological environment on Portuguese Island.
