Durban - South Africans are a bundle of contradictions and quirks, according to an online guest survey conducted by The Protea Hospitality Group into winter preferences.
Contrary to popular belief, we aren’t a bunch of die-hard drinkers. In fact, when offered a choice of hot chocolate or hot toddy, 85 percent chose hot chocolate. And, more than 60 percent chose a hot bath over a glass of wine.
Nearly 57 percent preferred a bowl of soup over a stew and 75 percent opted for hot, sticky malva pudding over ice cream. Pancakes also win over vetkoek (70/30 percent split)..
Winter clearly brings out nostalgia in most of us too, because 60 percent would rather dunk an old-fashioned rusk in their coffee than the more très chic option of a biscotti.
And, 75 percent would prefer Cape Town’s rain to Jozi’s frost. - The Mercury
