Cape Town - Christo Davids started acting at the age of 11 and has starred in numerous films, television and theatre productions, including the critically acclaimed film Forgiveness opposite Arnold Vosloo. He has won and been nominated for numerous awards, including a Naledi Theatre Award.
This festive season he appears in Scrooge. He has also written and directed a play called Platform 9, both which play out at the Baxter.
How widely have you travelled?
I have travelled through the UK and Europe a few times (Paris, Marseilles, Amsterdam) and also to New York and Thailand.
Where was your favourite time spent abroad?
Amsterdam. There is something about that city that makes me feel like I belong there, and I am not talking about the good stuff, no thanks. I am talking about the way of life and the attitude of the people.
Your worst experience on a holiday?
When I was hit by a car in Paris. Luckily it didn’t hit me very hard and I was fine afterwards.
Your funniest experience?
While in New York I got lost. For two hours I walked around in circles. During this confusion, a stranger started following me out of the blue, all the way shouting “The end of the world is near”. At first it was quite freaky but afterwards I thought it very entertaining.
What do you avoid during a holiday?
I really make an effort to not act like a tourist.
Best meal abroad?
That is a difficult one as there have been so many memorable moments. If I have to choose, I would say Bitterballe in the Netherlands.
What have you learnt from your travels?
I learnt the hard way – do not speak English to the French.
Ideal travelling companion?
Most trips I have been on, I have been on my own, so this year was the first time I travelled with my wife and it was really great.
Culture vulture or adrenalin junkie?
Greatest travel luxury?
I reckon probably a hostel somewhere that is not too packed.
How can you put these two words in the same sentence? It is a sin to read – it might be because I am always reading or preparing for a script so I tend to avoid reading.
I really enjoy the Grachte in Amsterdam.
Now there’s a wonderful thought. A three-month-long tour through South America.
As a seasoned traveller and flyer can you share some tips?
Have all your stuff and documentation in order before you get to the customs desk. Considering all the urban legends it still baffles me that people can often not get this right.
Cape Town. I am excited to perform in Scrooge and then of course, set up my own play which I have written and directed called Platform 9, both at the Baxter Theatre this festive season. - Weekend Argus
