Cape Town - With Youth Day falling on a Thursday this year, many South Africans are taking an extra day off to take advantage of a long weekend.

Despite the struggling economy, locals are also still booking local flights for leisure travel, with data from travel search platform Cheapflights.co.za showing a surge in search for domestic flights over this weekend.

The most popular destinations for travel over the weekend are, not surprisingly, Cape Town, Durban and then Johannesburg.

Durban shows the highest surges in searches of the top destinations, with searches for travel there up 152 percent compared to previous weeks.

Traditional holiday resort Margate, should also be prepared for an influx of visitors, with searches for travel there up 420 percent compared to previous weeks.

The least popular destinations for travel over the long weekend are Umtata, Polokwane and Phalaborwa.

As expected, the most expensive day to fly is Thursday 16 June, with flights starting at R1 915. The cheapest day to fly is Saturday 18 June, with flights starting at R1 589.

Visit Cheapflights.co.za to find out more about these flights and many other offers available.
