BE GOOD: Roger Goode

Cape Town - South African DJ Roger Goode, or The Raj as he is known to his fans, rose to local fame for his first single In The Beginning. He then released his first album Coming up for Air under the dance record label, SheerDance. He has his own show on 5FM, and DJs across country.

How widely have you travelled?

Enough to put me off airports for life!

Your worst experience on a holiday?

Our car was towed away in Spain because we didn’t see the unfamiliar No Parking sign as we parked in a refuse disposal area. We spent two days searching for the impound lot and then misunderstood the directions from a traffic officer and ended up walking miles to eventually find the car. Needless to say it was expensive to get it back and I now prefer riding on a scooter.

Your funniest experience?

BITING THE BIG APPLE: Roger Goode and friends in New York.

I met a pilot in Europe who does acrobatic skywriting. At the time he was advertising a party that we were going to. He had been warned several times not to fly too low or too close to the top of the buildings. He accidentally clipped the plane on a pole on the top of a building. After the emergency landing the authorities arrived to deliver a fine. But due to some legality, instead of giving the fine to the pilot, the police read the fine to the actual plane. The pilot was quite chuffed as he didn’t own the plane.

What do you avoid during a holiday?

Tourist attractions.

Your favourite restaurant and food during your travels?

La Perla in Sea Point. I love the Vitello (veal) al Limone.

Your favourite place for sundowners, at home or abroad?

I’m not allowed to drink (mom’s orders)… but if I were to be a little sneaky I’d say nothing touches the Atlantic seaboard of Cape Town.

As a seasoned traveller and flyer can you share some tips?

Use the system, get frequent flyer miles and get access to the lounges. If you’re only going on short trips and need to move around quickly, pack light, only the essentials, and try to avoid checking your luggage in. Renting a car always works out cheaper then taxis but you miss out on cool stories from the locals. - Weekend Argus
