Johannesburg - Continuing volatility in the currency markets – and especially where the rand is concerned – make prepaid currency cards a must.

American Express has announced that its prepaid, reloadable American Express GlobalTravel Card will be available until December 31 with the normal R100 purchase fee waived.

The card, which is sold and administered by American Express Foreign Exchange branches across the country and through Nedbank Forex branches, can be used to purchase products and services at overseas merchants, and make ATM cash withdrawals at millions of locations that accept American Express worldwide.

The card, which has the added benefit of giving its South African users access to a 24-hour global assistance programme, can be used by first-time or seasoned holidaymakers, families, leisure travellers and business tourists.

American Express says the card is more secure than conventional cards as there is no link back to one’s bank account.

As a measure of precaution, American Express issues two cards (one a backup card) at the time of purchase. Both cards are magstriped and require the card member’s signature or PIN to transact, keeping security tight.

If the primary card goes missing, it can immediately be blocked and the backup card activated at no cost via a call to the 24-hour Customer Service Centre.

The Amex global network enables it to assist clients with unforeseen travel issues. This assistance includes a free card replacement service and access to emergency cash via the American Express network of global partners. The American Express Global Assist Service provides assistance to South Africans who may require emergency translation services, or urgent referral to a doctor or lawyer while abroad.

Card members are able to access the balance and manage their funds via the internet or by calling the American Express Customer Service centre at any time and wherever they are.

Unlike other products in the market, with the American Express GlobalTravel Card the funds on the card are the property of the card member. If the card expires, the funds remain available and a new card can be issued. This significantly simplifies matters for those who travel abroad often. - Saturday Star
