Have you heard about The Åland Islands?
This region in Finland comprises of 6,700 islands. The capital, Mariehamn, on the main island of Fasta Åland, is known for its beaches and streets lined with 19th-century wooden townhouses, handicraft shops and cafes.
Västerhamn, the town's western port, links Åland with Estonia, Sweden and mainland Finland. Here are some things you can do while on the island:
1. Take a walking tour of Mariehamn

Known as the capital of Aland, Mariehamn is a maritime town filled with wooden houses and cafes. This cosy town is best explored on foot as it allows to get a sense of local customs and the culture. Must see attractions include Pommern, a four masted sailing ship and St George church.
2. You must see the ruins of Bomarsund

The fortress of Bomarsund was one of the most talked about structures on the island. However, it was destroyed during the Crimean War in 1854. Visitors can explore the ruins for free. It makes for a good day trip as there are also restaurants and cafes on site.
4. Kastelholm Castle

The castle is opened to the public from May to mid- September. It dates back to 1388, a time when the Swedish kings utilised the facilities. This iconic site has lots of history just waiting to be heard.
