Even today, Leipzig is one of the most important places for fairs and congresses in Germany. The new trade fair and exhibition centre with the congress centre next to it, was opened in 1996 and combines modern architecture with state-of-the-art multimedia and telecommunication technology.

Leipzig has a number of rivers and canals and, with the recent reclaiming of the open cast coal mine pits, it now has beautiful lakes, too.

Die M�dler-Passage wurde 1912-1914 f�r den Leder-Fabrikanten Anton M�dler errichtet und l�ste den legend�ren "Auerbachs Hof" ab, den Heinrich Stromer von Auerbach bis 1538 erbauen lie�. Nach einer umfangreichen Renovierung 1997 beherbergt die historische Passage heute ca. 25 Gesch�fte. Anziehungspunkt im Untergeschoss ist das weltber�hmte Restaurant Auerbachs Keller. / The M�dler Passage was built from 1912 to 1914 for the leather manufacturer Anton M�dler. It replaced the legendary "Auerbachs Court", which was set up in 1538 by Heinrich Stromer von Auerbach. Since an extensive renovation in 1997 the historical arcade is home to approximately 25 shops. The world famous restaurant "Auerbachs Keller" in the basement is a major attraction.

Der Mendebrunnen steht auf dem Augustusplatz. Er wurde 1886 eingeweiht und überstand unbeschadet zwei Weltkriege. Das 142 m hohe City-Hochhaus wurde 1968-72 als Sektionsgebäude der Universität Leipzig errichtet. Bis 2001 erfolgte der Umbau zum privaten Bürogebäude. In der 29. Etage befindet sich mit dem „Panorama Restaurant“ das höchst gelegene Restaurant Mitteldeutschlands (110 m). Auf der Dachterrasse genießt man einen fantastischen Blick über die Stadt. / The Mende fountain is located on Augustusplatz square. The fountain was inaugurated in 1886 and survived World War I and World War II. The city high-rise was constructed between 1968 and 1972. It is 142 m high and was originally built as a department building of Leipzig University. By 2001, it was refurbished and turned into a private office building. “Panorama Tower” Restaurant, located on the 29th floor in an altitude of 110m, is the highest restaurant in Middle Germany. From the rooftop terrace visitors can enjoy a fantastic view over the city.

Die Thomaskirche wurde 1212 als Klosterkirche im sp�tgotischen Stil begr�ndet und ist weltweit als Wirkungsst�tte des Thomanerchors bekannt geworden. Die Chorknaben wurden in der angegliederten Schule vor allem musikalisch ausgebildet und sangen als Gegenleistung f�r Schulbildung und Unterkunft. Heute leben, lernen und proben die Thomaner im knapp 1 km entfernten Alumnat und besuchen das gegen�berliegende Thomasgymnasium. Jeden Freitag (18 Uhr) und jeden Samstag (15 Uhr) finden die Motetten des Thomanerchors in der Thomaskirche statt (au�er Schulferien und Tourneen). / St. Thomas Church was built as a cloister in late gothic style in 1212 and is known worldwide as the domain of the St. Thomas Boys Choir. The boys of the choir were educated in music at the school which is attached to the St. Thomas Church. They sang in return for their education and accommodation. Today they live, study and rehearse in the alumnat, which is just one kilometre away, and attend the Thomas grammar school on the opposite side. Ea

Die Nikolaikirche ist die `lteste Kirche Leipzigs. 1982 lud das protestantische Gotteshaus mit der damals hachst selbstbewussten Aufforderung �Nikolaikirche � offen fxr alle� jeden Montag zu den Friedensgebeten ein und wurde damit zum Ausgangspunkt der Friedlichen Revolution 1989. Zentrale Figur dieser Zeit war der hiesige Pfarrer Christian Fxhrer. / St. Nicholas Church is the oldest church in Leipzig. In 1982 the protestant church invited everyone with the very self-confident invitation �St. Nicholas Church � open to everyone� to pray for peace each Monday. It became the originator of the Peaceful Revolution in 1989. On October 9, 1989, 70,000 people would demonstrate for democracy in Leipzig�s city centre after the Monday prayer for peace in St. Nicholas Church.
