London - Ever wondered what it would be like to take tea with the Queen?

Soon visitors to her favourite residence, Windsor Castle, will come as close as it is possible to get without an invitation when the historic building’s first public cafe opens as part of a £37-million investment programme.

The Royal Collection Trust, a registered charity which manages the public opening of the Queen’s official residences, is to plough the money into redeveloping facilities at the 1 000-year-old castle and at Holyroodhouse, the Queen’s official residence in Scotland.

The funds have come from ticket sales and the sale of rather a lot of royal souvenirs.

At Windsor, where the Queen spends an increasing amount of her time and is often now resident from Thursday through to Monday evenings, the ground floor of the State Apartments will be open to the public.

The 14th-century Undercroft, one of the few remaining parts built by Edward III in the 1350s and one of the oldest surviving parts of the castle, is to host its first café.

Its refurbishment as an eatery is appropriate given that it served as the castle’s main cellar and larder nearly 700 years ago. Work should start next year with the opening due at the end of 2018. It is the biggest work at Windsor since the 1992 fire.
