Edinburgh - David Hasselhoff has signed up to lead a fleet of multimillion-pound supercars down The Mound in Edinburgh to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Gumball 3 000 rally.

The former Knight Rider and Baywatch star will make his grand entrance into the Scottish capital, leading the world’s most exclusive cars as they take part in the seven-day race across two continents.

Rally organiser Maximillion Cooper chose to take the race to Edinburgh and to stop off in London as a glorified stag celebration before he heads off to Ibiza to marry his pop star fiancée, Eve.

The star-studded race is to draw crowds of people to Edinburgh to watch the spectacular line-up of cars, which will have travelled from Florida to Atlanta and New York before crossing the Atlantic in a fleet of private jets and cargo planes.

Racers will arrive on The Mound on June 8 and the event is expected to be a hit with the public. They will then drive on to London, Paris and Barcelona before finishing in Ibiza. The Batmobile from The Dark Knight joined the line-up last year.

Cooper, 41, said the rally would double up as his stag week.

He said: “Incorporating Edinburgh into the route and stopping off in London just adds to the romanticism, (with our) having met in London and (my having) proposed on Christmas Day in Edinburgh. I can’t wait.

“Driving from Miami to get to our wedding in Ibiza sounds pretty crazy, but we met on the Gumball in 2010, so incorporating the rally into our wedding plans seemed appropriate.”

Leading the racers back to Edinburgh will be Hasselhoff, who found a parking ticket had been slapped on his car, Kitt, while he was at a press call in the Pleasance Courtyard in 2012.

City festivals and events champion councillor Steve Cardownie said the rally promised to be an exciting event. “This day out is bound to prove popular with motorsport fans and spectators.” – Daily Mail
