London - Looming out of the misty forest like some ancient mythological creature, this tree appears to have grown arms, legs and even a rather small head.

In fact, its rather haunting shape has been compared to Treebeard, the walking, talking tree, or Ent, from JRR Tolkien’s novel The Lord Of The Rings and the films based on it.

The 65ft-tall beech was spotted deep in a forest in the heart of the Balkan Mountains, in Bulgaria, by amateur photographer Deyan Kossev, 49.

Mr Kossev, who is a doctor, said: “I was walking through the mountains when suddenly I spotted him. I was speechless and stopped in my tracks.

“It was surreal, it looks exactly like a man. Nobody knows why it has grown into such a bizarre formation. It looks like one of the walking trees from The Lord Of The Rings.”
