Bratislava - Tourism in Slovakia saw its best year in 2015, Slovak Transport, Construction and Regional Development Minister Jan Pociatek said.

More than 4.3 million visitors that year opted for a vacation in Slovakia. “We can establish that these numbers give us hope that tourism in Slovakia is proceeding in the right direction,” said Pociatek, adding Slovakia earned about 2 billion euros from tourism for the first time ever.

Last year was groundbreaking in terms of the number of domestic tourists who spent their holidays in Slovakia.

Their number rose to 2.6 million, which is an increase of 13 percent compared to 2008 and of 10 percent compared to 2013.

The largest share of foreign tourists came from the Czech Republic, Germany and Poland.

“However, it pleases us that people from less traditional places have started to come to Slovakia to enjoy their holidays,” added Ministry State Secretary Frantisek Palko.

For instance, Slovakia experienced a growing number of tourists from China, Britain, the United States, the Netherlands, Italy and France in 2015, he said.
