Question: I’d love to visit New York next month, but with two toddlers in tow I’m worried about keeping them entertained without spending a fortune. Can you suggest any ideas for a budget-friendly family stay?

Answer: There are plenty of great activities for kids in New York that needn’t break the bank. Find budget-friendly accommodation at The Hotel @ Times Square. It’s centrally located near attractions such as the Rockefeller Centre, Central Park Zoo and the theatre district and offers free stays for children under 12, free breakfast and dedicated family rooms with a shared bathroom, microwave oven and even a fridge. Prices start from £269.99 (about R3 200) per night for a room with two double beds in September. For more details visit thehotelattimes square.co.uk, and to book call freephone 0808 178 6363.

If you’re after a cheap and memorable family day out, why not try one of NYC’s September fairs. Take children to the Historic Richmond Town, a living history village where they can discover colonial life in the 1700s.

The annual country fair on September 1 includes circus performers, a petting zoo, live music and a pie-eating contest. Alternatively, one of New York’s biggest street fairs, Atlantic Antic, takes place on September 30 with more than a million people flocking to enjoy the huge array of foods, crafts and music, storytelling and pony rides. Or, as a special treat, get the children excited by this year’s official New York family ambassadors,

The Muppets. They can create their own Muppet or monster at the What-Not Workshop at FAO Schwarz toy shop. - Mail on Sunday
