The eastern states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut are the oldest inhabited parts of America and are where the first shots of the American Revolution were fired so, apart from the autumn extravaganza and the accompanying diversions, there are graceful colonial towns, historic buildings and old whaling villages, as well as hundreds of kilometres of beautiful coastline and thick forests of oak, maple, hemlock, beech, pine and spruce.
