SNOW, a gigantic slide and animals from the Ice Age – Canal Walk’s Ice Adventure theme park has a treat for everyone this festive season.

This week families turned out in droves for the opening of the park. Young and old had a chance to mingle with celebrities including Liezel van der Westhuizen, former Springbok Chester Williams and Kurt Schoonraad, who took part in a challenge to see who could go down the ice slide fastest and win R10 000 for a charity of their choice.

Baskin-Robbins, the world’s largest chain of ice cream shops, had a 2m-long table filled with its wares. The crowd could taste the flavours ahead of the stores opening next week.

Children and parents enjoyed the different size slides, built snow castles, snowmen and were mesmerised by the lifelike sabretooth tigers and mammoths which added to the spectacle.

Williams and his wife, Maria Robson, said they would return so their kids could experience the ice adventure.

“We get invited every year but this year is particularly spectacular and we will definitely come back during the holidays.”

Chloe and Matthew Williams, both 12, hope to return to have more fun on the slides over the holidays. Chloe said this was “great, especially the animals... They freak me out and move like real animals”.

Matthew enjoyed the slides. He said they would be sure to twist their parents’ arms to spend as much time at the park as possible.

Jenna Coldwell,12, from Rondebosch who was at the launch with her mother and 10-year-old brother Nick said: “It’s totally cool and ice agey.”

Loren George, a spokeswoman for Canal Walk, said they were excited to bring the Ice Age back to life. “Where else will you find snow in the middle of summer?”

“We have so many different animals and our animals are really cool and they move. The children can take pictures on them and it is really fun.”

Father Christmas will arrive on a sleigh and children can have pictures taken with him.

The theme park will be open until January 8 from 10am to 6pm. Tickets are available from Computicket from R20 to R80.
