A train at the Van Der Stel station in Strand went up in flames this afternoon, allegedly due to an electrical fault.
No deaths or injuries were reported and the fire department extinguished the flames after the fire broke out shortly after 4pm.
 
Western Cape Metrorail spokesperson Riana Scott rubbished claims of arson.
“Trains on the Strand line will terminate at Eerste River and a limited bus service will operate between Strand and Eerste River until the affected train has been cleared from the section. Delays of 30 - 40 minutes can be expected.”

The City of Cape Town's Fire and Rescue Service's Theo Layne, said that no injuries were reported.
“The a city is fine rescue service responded to Van Der Stel railway station...one railway carriage was destroyed in the fire. No injuries were reported.”
