Johannesburg - Absa has appointed two new board directors, the banking giant announced on Thursday.

Patrick Clackson and Ashock Vaswani would be joining the board from March 1, said communications head for Absa Mwambu Wanendeya.

“Clackson replaces Ivan Ritossa, who stood down from the board on December 31, 2012, and Ashok replaces Antony Jenkins...

“Jenkins joined the Absa board on March 23 2009 and was appointed as group chief executive of Barclays PLC on August 30, 2012,” said Wanendeya.

Absa group chairman Garth Griffin thanked Jenkins for his contribution.

“We extend our sincere gratitude to Jenkins for his contribution to the boards of Absa Group and Absa Bank, as well as to the board committees on which he served,” said Griffin.

“His expertise will be sorely missed, but we very much look forward to his leadership as Chief Executive of Barclays.”

Both the new board members already hold positions in Barclays.

“Clackson is the chief executive of Barclays Corporate and investment banking in Europe, the Middle East and Africa,” said Wanendeya.

He said Clackson had been part of the company since 1998, while Vaswani had been with them since 2010.

“Vaswani is the chief executive of Barclays retail and business banking. He joined Barclays in 2010 and was the chief executive of the Barclays Africa businesses from October 2010 to September 2011, “ said Wanendeya.
