Johannesburg - Amcu-affiliated mineworkers held a short prayer service before they embarked on their march from a park in Dunkeld West to the Impala Platinum head offices in Sandton on Thursday.
An official said they hoped for a peaceful march as they were to submit their memorandum to the platinum company, demanding a R12,500 minimum wage.
“We are here because we want money,” the official told the marchers.
“If SABC 1 doesn't broadcast our news, we will chase them away,” said the official.
“We give them notice -- if our news isn't broadcast, we will boycott the station.”
After the prayer, hundreds of miners started out on the march.
The miners have been on strike for two months, demanding a minimum wage of R12,500 per month.
Amcu members are also on strike at Anglo American Platinum and Lonmin.
They have rejected the companies' offer of a nine percent wage increase.
The union also revised its demand, stating that the R12,500 could be phased in over four years.
The platinum companies have, however, rejected the revised demand, saying it was unaffordable.
Meanwhile, negotiations facilitated by the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration have been indefinitely suspended to give the parties time to reflect on the current offer. - Sapa
