The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union is scheduled to apply for an urgent interdict on Tuesday to grant miners access to the Harmony Gold's Kusasalethu mine hostels.

On January 3, the gates of the hostels were closed and miners were told the mine was shut down until further notice to review operations after several illegal strikes.

Miners were denied access into the mine hostel and many slept outside the gates.

Amcu took the matter to the High Court in Johannesburg.

On Monday, union secretary Jeff Mphahlele confirmed that the matter would be heard on Tuesday.

In December, 1700 workers at the Kusasalethu mine had a sit-in demanding that their fellow employees, who have been suspended, be reinstated.

Amcu described the situation at Harmony as “calm but tense”. - Sapa
