BHP BILLITON manganese workers in South Africa began a strike over claims the company owes them bonuses before the mines are spun off, according to the largest union at the operations. About 800 members of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) walked out on Friday at its Wessels and Mamatwan mines near Hotazel in the Northern Cape, the union’s regional co-ordinator Lucas Phiri said yesterday. The NUM would meet management today and was asking members to report for duty while the issues were discussed, he said. The workers claim BHP Billiton owes them bonuses before a planned spin-off of the manganese mines into a new company called South32 goes ahead. Shares rose 2.04 percent to R272.54 on the JSE. – Bloomberg
