Cell C majority stake up for grabs

Johannesburg - Dubai-based Oger Telecom is to sell its 75% in Cell C, SA’s third largest cellphone operator, Reuters has reported.

“All options are open. If we get a good price we will sell,” Oger chairman Mohamed Hariri is quoted as saying.

Hariri said the decision was prompted by the South African regulators’ decision to slash interconnection fees to 8 cents by March 2017.

It has been suggested that a larger rival may be able to carry the lower cost with its larger subscriber volumes.

This would include MTN, South Africa’s second largest operator but the largest on the continent. At its results presentation on Wednesday, MTN CEO Sifiso Dabengwa was asked if he would consider buying a stake in SA’s Telkom and suggested that if there was the opportunity at the correct value, it would be considered.
