The Mail & Guardian is set to retrench up to 25 people - including 16 members of its editorial department - as part of a restructuring process at the company.

The weekly paper’s deputy executive chairman, Trevor Ncube, made the announcement yesterday.

According to Ncube, the restructuring has been necessitated by structural changes within the media industry and tough trading conditions as a result of weak economic growth in the country.

It has also been rumoured that the newspaper is struggling financially, and that staff were told last week that the company “is in trouble” and needed to reduce its salary bill.

However, the company’s chief executive, Hoosain Karjieker, dismissed the rumours.

“The media industry, as we all know, is going through changes. We need to adjust to these changes,” he said .

“We have identified a number of areas… that are not doing well, and we are looking at restructuring them.”

The retrenchment process is set to begin on August 17.
