DIAMONDCORP, which supplies Tiffany, would continue production at its Lace mine project in South Africa despite a work stoppage by some employees, it said yesterday. Members of the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) started the strike last Thursday after the London-based company refused to employ two more full-time shop stewards at the project, DiamondCorp said. The stoppage is protected by law, meaning workers cannot be fired. “The current five appointed shop stewards from within the workforce is more than adequate to deal with union issues at Lace,” chief executive Paul Loudon said. “Management is more than willing to continue indefinitely with the non-Amcu workers.” Shares plunged 34.67 percent to close at R1.30 on the JSE yesterday. – Bloomberg
