Eskom has not lined up enough coal supplies to meet the needs of the generation beyond next year. Demand for coal from Eskom’s power stations in Mpumalanga would be 17 million tons higher than the supplies it had contracted so far, Public Enterprises Minister Lynne Brown said yesterday.

“The available Eskom-grade coal in Mpumalanga exceeds 5 000 tons,” she said, adding it was enough to meet demand.

Eskom had so far contracted 899 million tons for delivery from next year to 2030, she said.

Some supply contracts needed to be renegotiated, company spokesman Khulu Phasiwe said.
