Bloemfontein - Power utility Eskom has evacuated workers from a construction tunnel at the Ingula pumped storage construction site near Ladysmith in Kwazulu-Natal, a spokesman confirmed on Wednesday.

“Workers were evacuated as a precaution due to smoke,” said Eskom spokesman Andrew Etzinger.

He said a minor fault with one of the machines in the tunnel caused the smoke.

Etzinger said there were no injuries to workers.

Six workers were killed at the construction site after a tunnel collapsed in October last year. - Sapa
