Ga-Rankuwa -

Expelled ANCYL leader Julius Malema entered the room where men arrested in connection with violence at Lonmin were appearing at the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

Heads turned as Malema walked in before 2pm, accompanied by suspended ANCYL secretary-general Sindiso Magaqa and suspended league spokesman Floyd Shivambu.

At the time, Magistrate Esau Bodigelo was going through arguments presented by prosecutor Nigel Carpenter and the defence team, made up of six attorneys.

Bodigelo was expected to make a ruling on whether the 270 would remain in custody with their bail hearing postponed, as requested by the State.

The State wants the bail application put off for seven days, when it says particulars of every individual would have been verified by the police.

The men's lawyers wanted them released urgently, arguing that some of the men were not getting medication for chronic illnesses such as tuberculosis and HIV. - Sapa
