Johannesburg - Mobile operator MTN said on Thursday the number of its subscribers had edged 1.8 percent higher over the last quarter to a total of 227.5 million, with growth in the South African market being dampened by reduced sales and certain operational challenges linked to introducing a replacement distributor.

MTN - a leading emerging market mobile operator, connecting approximately 228 million people in 22 countries across Africa and the Middle East - said in a statement it had added 4.1 million subscribers across its markets over the last quarter ended March 31, 2015.

MTN Group president and CEO Sifiso Dabengwa said the group’s results for the quarter were hit by a weaker macro-economic environment and continued price competition. He said MTN Nigeria had improved subscriber growth, but revenue and minutes growth remained challenging.

“We continue to focus on our non-voice services which remain the key driver of the group’s revenue growth,” Dabengwa said.
