Johannesburg - The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and chrome producer Samancor announced on Thursday that they had concluded a three-year wage agreement that would see workers at its mines receive an average 12 percent increase in the first year while workers at its smelters would receive a 10 percent increase in the first year.

The agreement covered all components of remuneration including salary and fringe benefits such as medical and travel and other allowances.

The agreement was effective from the beginning of July and both sets of workers would receive 10 percent annual increases in final two years of the agreement.

Samancor mines are the Eastern Chrome Mines in Steelpoort in Limpopo and Western Chrome Mines at Mooinooi in the North West. The company’s smelters are located in Tubatse in Limpopo, Ferrometals in Emalahleni in Mpumalnga and Middleburg, also in Mpumalanga.
