Johannesburg - Energy and chemical producing company, Sasol emits far more greenhouse gases than any of the top 100 companies listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, the Sunday Times reported.

Despite this, Sasol secured 54th place in the environmental section of Legae's environmental, social and governance scorecard, doing better than financial companies, holding companies and IT companies.

According to Legae, this was because although Sasol was a major polluter, it was not apathetic to environmental issues.

Authors of the Legae report said an absence of policies on the environment were the reasons why some companies scored so badly.

“Disclosure is too weak to make any reasonable comment,” Legae was quoted as saying.

The authors of the Legae report noted that resource companies generally escaped the lowest rankings because of their efforts in terms of disclosure.

This was despite the fact that the greenhouse gas emissions of the top four emitters - Sasol, BHP, Anglo American and ArcelorMittal - amounted to 2.5 times the combined emissions of the other 68 companies that disclosed their emissions.

BHP was placed 48th, Anglo 46th and Amsa 62nd. - Sapa
