A sit-in at AngloGold Ashanti's Mponeng shaft in Carletonville was resolved by early afternoon on Thursday, the company said.

Senior vice president of investor relations Stewart Bailey said: “Everybody has now returned to surface”.

He said 120 workers, out of nearly 6000 employed at the mine, staged a sit-in protest earlier in the day.

“They wanted to speak to senior management, and management has spoken to them.”

“The situation was very efficiently resolved.”

He said further details, including the motive for the protest, were still emerging.

Earlier, the SABC reported that the workers began the sit-in last night over conditions mine management wanted to impose on an incentive bonus.

The bonus was apparently offered to workers as an incentive for their return to work after a wildcat strike, which began in September.

Workers' representative Rogers Motlhabane told the SABC: “Those people were promised the amount R1500, now management has given the brief that the money is only on conditions. That was not agreed before.”

Last week, workers returned to the company's two Vaal River mines, Kopanong and Great Noligwe, and to their Moab Khotsong operations, near Orkney. - Sapa
