Johannesburg - Transnet CEO Brian Molefe has been seconded to act as the acting chief executive of South Africa’s power utility, Eskom.

Public Enterprises Minister Lynne Brown made the announcement on Friday, adding Molefe would start work immediately.

Molefe’s appointment followed the suspension of former Eskom CEO Tshediso Matona last month.

“Colleagues, Mr Molefe’s appointment to address what is currently inarguably the country’s biggest challenge, serves as a ringing endorsement of the depth of leadership we have at Transnet and our GCE’s unquestionable talent as a leader,” Transnet said in a statement.

Transnet would now be embarking on a process of appointing an acting CEO while Molefe attempts to right the Eskom ship.
