Rustenburg - A worker died at Hossy shaft at the Lonmin platinum mines in Marikana, near Rustenburg, the company said on Wednesday.

“It is with deep regret that Lonmin Plc confirms that an employee, Silver S. Cossa, died as a result of injuries sustained in a vehicle accident at one of its shafts on Tuesday. The incident occurred at Hossy shaft in Lonmin’s Bushveld complex. A full investigation is underway,” the company said.

Chief executive officer, Ben Magara said the incident was being investigated. “We are in the process of examining the scene to determine the cause of the accident and we are working with unions and the Department of Mineral Resources to get to the bottom of exactly what led to this incident,” he said.

“Our last fatality was over 18 months ago and we recently passed 10 million underground fatality free shifts at Marikana,” he said. “We continue to believe that that zero harm is achievable.”

The company said that the deceased’s family has been informed and was being supported through this difficult time.
