Johannesburg - A website showing the Western Cape's capital infrastructure investment and delivery in municipalities was launched by premier Helen Zille on Wednesday.

“The website provides a comprehensive picture of the many infrastructure projects that will be delivered by some of our key provincial departments,” she said in a speech prepared for delivery in Cape Town.

The website consists of an interactive map, where the user clicks on dots representing the various investment projects.

An information window then pops up detailing the nature and value of each initiative, the project's expected time frame and the provincial departments responsible for it.

In the first phase of the project, over 1050 projects with values totalling R14.3 billion, were uploaded to the website.

These included 258 housing projects valued at R6.7bn, 61 new and replacement schools valued at R2.1bn and R971 million to be spent on upgrading roads.

“This is over and above the billions we have invested into municipalities over the last four years,” she said.

“We believe the website launched today demonstrates the Western Cape government’s commitment to transparency and investing in, and developing, infrastructure in the province,” said Zille, who is also Democratic Alliance leader.

“The launch of this website is part of our journey to becoming the best run regional government in the world.” - Sapa
