Lephalale – President Jacob Zuma will officially open unit six at Eskom’s new Medupi power station at Lephalale, Limpopo, on Sunday.

Unit six is expected to add at least 800 MW to the struggling national power grid. The unit, the first of the coal-powered plant’s six units to be completed, was synchronised with the national grid in March this year, and has been undergoing tests

Medupi was scheduled to be fully online four years ago, but construction at the plant has been delayed by labour unrest, leading to spiraling costs running into billions of rand.

Guests started arriving at the power station after 7am on Sunday morning and were directed to a huge marquee erected opposite unit six.

Reporters were flown from Waterkloof Airforce Base in Pretoria early on Sunday. The media contingent will be taken on a guided tour of the massive construction site later.
