Tokyo - Japan's unemployment rate climbed to 3.6 per cent in September for the first rise in three months, the government said Friday.

Service and entertainment industries saw a decrease of 110 000 jobs from a year earlier to 2.37 million, and transport and mailing industries eliminated 90 000 positions to 2.39 million, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications said.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare said the availability of jobs - measured as the ratio of job offers per job seeker - edged down to 1.09 in September from the previous month for the first fall in three years and four months. - Sapa-dpa
