CHINA was discussing the construction of a base over the next 10 years in Namibia for the People’s Liberation Army Navy, the Namibian Times reported. The base in Walvis Bay would be one of 18 that would be established in various regions, the paper reported last week, citing unidentified “Chinese media”. The Namibian Times report was based on an unofficial Chinese internet report and was “inaccurate”, “exaggerated” and therefore “groundless”, Defence Ministry spokesman Geng Yansheng said at a monthly press conference in Beijing yesterday, according to a transcript of his remarks. Geng did not say which parts of the report, if any, were accurate. – Bloomberg
