Seoul - The number of employed South Koreans rose sharply in February from a year ago, even as the national jobless rate increased from the previous month, government data showed Wednesday.

The total number of employed people stood at 24.82 million in February, up 835,000 from a year earlier, Statistics Korea said.

It marked the largest on-year expansion in job creation since March 2002.

But the seasonally adjusted jobless rate stood at 3.9 percent in February, an increase of 3.2 percent from the previous month.

Statistics Korea said the unemployment figure was the result of more young people entering the job market during the January-February graduation and recruitment season. - Sapa-AFP
