Johannesburg - The Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) remains positive about the mediation process to resolve a strike in the platinum sector, it said on Monday.

“We remain confident that a mediated solution will be found to resolve the strike... and that parties had come to the process willing to engage with each other,” CCMA director Nerine Kahn said in a statement.

Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) workers went on strike at Impala Platinum, Lonmin, and Anglo American Platinum mines on Thursday.

The CEOs of Implats, Amplats and Lonmin, and Amcu president Joseph Mthunjwa did not attend the talks, which were held in Pretoria.

The CCMA said because of the ethical principles in such a mediation, and CCMA practice, details of the content of discussions between the parties could not be revealed.

The talks were meant to continue until Wednesday.

The union is demanding R12 500 per month for entry-level workers, but the platinum companies have said this is not affordable.
