Johannesburg - Mark Cutifani, the chief executive of Anglo American, believes that the courts are the wrong place to resolve the current impasse over empowerment ownership in South Africa’s troubled mining industry.

Cutifani was speaking in Johannesburg on Thursday where he called on the government to provide clarity on empowerment ownership in the industry.

“It’s my view that there has to be a conversation with people around a table, not in the courts,” Cutifani said.

“Don’t let the courts decide on the future of the country,” he added.

The Chamber of Mines and Mineral Resources Minister Ngoako Ramatlhodi have approached the courts for a ruling regarding the interpretation of the mining charter’s clause on empowerment.
