The National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) will protest tomorrow against Eskom’s application for an average 16 percent a year electricity tariff increase between 2013 and 2018. Numsa said the protest would be in support of submissions it would be making to the National Energy Regulator of SA (Nersa), which is carrying out hearings in the nine provinces from tomorrow to the end of the month. “As a union we reject any attempts to blackmail the country in order to satisfy rating agencies who were directly responsible for influencing our own government to adopt neo-liberal policies in the first place. The triple crisis of poverty, unemployment and inequality requires that we act differently,” Numsa said. Among the six reasons Numsa gave for Nersa to turn down the increase were the risk of job losses and the inflationary effect of such tariff hikes. – Staff reporter
