Pretoria - Food and beverages income rose by 5% in February compared to February last year, Stats SA reported on Monday.

Food sales were largely responsible for jump as they rose 6%, according to the statistics agency. Bar sales were unchanged while other income fell by 3,6%. Restaurants and coffee shops saw sales rise by 6,2% while take-aways and fast food outlets saw their sales rise 6,2% while catering services saw their income fall by 3,6%.

The boost in food and beverage sales for the month to February comes as the boost to consumer incomes from lower oil prices was starting to dissipate as oil and petrol prices edge upwards.
