Production at tyre manufacturer Goodyear South Africa’s plant in Uitenhage was disrupted yesterday when workers belonging to the National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) went on a protected strike. Meanwhile, production at Toyota South Africa Motors’ plant in Prospecton in Durban is set to resume today after the resolution of a six-day strike at independent component supplier Toyota Boshoku. Phumzile Nodongwe, Numsa’s regional secretary, said yesterday workers at Goodyear were demanding a relief allowance when placed on a staggered break, which had been the standard practice within the company. Lize Hayward, a Goodyear SA spokeswoman, said Goodyear remained committed to working with the union to find an appropriate solution. – Roy Cokayne
