Johannesburg - Eskom announced there would be no load shedding on Tuesday as it had enough electricity-generating capacity.

The embattled power utility announced there would be no rolling blackouts on Monday, only to implement load shedding hours later.

Eskom said unexpected changes on the vulnerable and constrained power system led to the change at short notice.

“Eskom would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused by last night’s (Monday’s) load shedding. This was caused by technical faults on some of our power generation fleet, resulting in the shortage of about 1 000MW. Some of the units, such as unit 1 of the Arnot power station, have been brought back on stream overnight,” the entity said in a statement.

“There is currently no planned load shedding today (Tuesday) as Eskom has enough generating capacity to meet the demand.”

Cash-strapped Eskom has applied to the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) for a hike of 25.3 percent in electricity tariffs. Nersa said it would make a decision on the matter by the end of June.
