Daphne Mashile-Nkosi has been named the Most Outstanding Woman in Business, in New York - her second award in two months.

In July, Mashile-Nkosi, executive chairwoman of Kalagadi Manganese, added the 2015 Africa Female Business Leader of the Year award to her many accolades.

The international title was presented to her at the 2015 African Business Awards, held in New York, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

The judges praised Mashile-Nkosi for “her remarkable achievements, in an industry which has often been one dominated by men”.

“Daphne is committed to the people of South Africa and uses every available resource to enrich the lives of the average South African. She is responsible for the creation of more than 30 000 jobs in the Northern Cape, and will go down in history as the mother of the largest mining venture of its kind in the past 30 years,” the judges said.

Also among the top business leaders recognised at the African Leadership Magazine awards ceremony were Strive Masiyiwa, founder of Econet Wireless and a Zimbabwean living in London, Helen Hai of the Huajian Group, and Mohammed Dewji, of the MeTL Group in Tanzania.

Among those who were commended were leading African businesses, including Dangote Cement, Guaranty Trust Bank, Abellon Clean Energy and the Nigerian Stock Exchange.

Mashile-Nkosi said: “I am humbled by the recognition and grateful for the opportunity to serve my country and my continent in business.

“The African Leadership Magazine is a pan-African flagship publication circulated to more than 180 000 targeted international investors, business executives, government policy-makers and multilateral agencies in Africa, Europe and the US.”

Mashile-Nkosi was the 2014 Africa chief executive officer of the Year, the 2013 IPM CEO of the Year, and won the 2013 International Star for Leadership in Quality award.

She is a trustee and chairwoman of the Women’s Development Bank Trust, chairwoman of Women’s Development Bank Investments Holdings.

Mashile-Nkosi is an activist on gender issues and encourages businesses to improve the quality of life of poor communities and to nurture woman entrepreneurs and business leaders.
